Danny White Award Presented by Lerner and Rowe- In 2000 Danny White was proclaimed the "Arizona Athlete of the Century" by the Arizona Republic newspaper. Danny was an All State player in baseball and football at Mesa Westwood High School, and received a baseball scholarship at Arizona State University. ASU baseball coach Bobby Winkles agreed to allow him to punt for Coach Frank Kush's football Sun Devils. But then, White would assume starting QB duties as a sophomore - while still punting - and went on to a stellar career, compiling a 33-4 record, winning three Fiesta Bowls, setting seven NCAA passing records, and being named All-WAC and All-American quarterback in 1973. White was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997. He is in the State of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, and both the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor. Playing in both WFL and NFL, mostly with the Dallas Cowboys, he played professional football 1974-1989. In addition to punting, his record as a starting QB with the Cowboys was 62-32, while he set numerous team records. Past winners of the "Danny White Top Arizona Quarterback Award' have gone on to star in both college and the professional football.
